Reykjavik – Iceland’s Smoky Bay

Reykjavik is the capital of Iceland and also the northernmost capital in Western Europe. It got its name from its Norwegian founder, Ingólfur Arnarson, one of the first settlers in Iceland, Reykjavik meaning “smoky bay” in Icelandic. The name supposedly refers to the steam from the hot springs in the area. This fascinating city boasts heated pavements, golf courses, numerous museums and theatres and attracts a great deal of tourists as well as people on weekend breaks.

Tip: Visit the Hallgrímskirkja (church of Hallgrímur), Reykjavik’s landmark. Built between 1945 and 1986, you get the best view over the city and sea from the top of the tower (73m).

Finding your way to and from the airport

By car:

Keflavík International Airport is c. 40 minutes from the city of Reykjavik.

By bus:

The Flybus provides regular services between Keflavík International Airport and Reykjavik. Journey time is around 40-50 minutes and the fare is approximately 1,300 ISK.

Hire cars:

There are centrally-located Sixt and Avis rental locations at all Germanwings destinations. Reserve a car here and get great bargains.

Keflavík International Airport is Iceland’s main international airport situated near Keflavík, around 50 km southwest of Reykjavik.
